CUBA!

This probably is not the best time to write this because of the jet lag and the lack of sleep; however there is too much I want to say about my holiday to not let you know now. This morning me and my boyfriend Liam landed back in the United Kingdom after a week in the beautiful Caribbean Island of Cuba. This was not a place that I had ever imagined myself going but yet we had an amazing week exploring and relaxing. A week of soaking up the sun and enjoying each others company as a birthday treat to ourselves (we have the same birthday).

Right before I go into anymore detail, it is probably best to give you a brief background of Cuba itself  to explain why its culture is so vibrant and different from anything I have ever known. I would say that Cuba is stuck making decades behind, it may have modern hotels but everything else is on a delayed reaction. This is because of its separation from the rest of the world both physically and politically which have lead to a lack of imports to help to advance the country.

The easiest way to show this is through their internet connection - you would expect a 21st century hotel to have wifi that is easily accessible but no! The wifi fails and has the reach that it may as well just be an ethernet cable. The whole country is set in this delay with pretty much everything especially with transport which consists mainly of American cars from the 1950's and 1960's. Who needs a time machine when you can go back to Cuba!!! This may not appeal to some people but it is part of its beauty.

Our time in our hotel consisted of very little but meant even more to us because we were able to enjoy the peace and the scenery. Many days were spent by the pool or the beach only really leaving to get food and drinks from the bar (unless you were in the pool, then you would swim to the bar). These days Liam would relax and listen to music whereas I would have my head in a book, only lifting it to tell Liam something exciting that had happened. The majority of the time I was drinking non-alcoholic Pina Colada or a Havana Special to try and deal with the heat.

On the Sunday we went to Havana which is the capital. The day consisted of a three hour drive to Havana where our tour guide gave us loads of information about the country along the way. Including that the common drink 'The Cuba Libre' (white rum and coke) has a large history to it being the symbol of whites and blacks coming together to get independence from the Spaniards. We got into old Havana having a quick tour on the bus before stopping for lunch. It was so beautiful. Then we went to the Fort onlooking Havana where Liam brought the typical Cuban Cigars and I just admired the beautiful views on the rest of the city. On our way back to old Havana we went through new Havana and saw the huge contrast between old and new. Our tour guide then gave us a walk around tour of old Havana with its cobbled streets before letting us explore.

Cuba is such a beautiful place because of the amount of culture and the amount of history. My favourite moment of the whole holiday was sitting in the Cuban bar at the resort listening to music and embracing the Cuban attitude. They are so happy and relaxed.
